Natalie Field Explores the 'Delicate Spring'

A Conceptual Portraiture Masterclass

Delicate Spring is an ethereal fashion story captured by Natalie Field Photography.

Delicate Spring was the theme for a recent workshop hosted by Vanguard Professional Natalie Field at the GBP Studio in Johannesburg, South Africa. The conceptual portraiture masterclass is an intense, full day workshop focussed on creating narratives within your imagery, and explores practical approaches to brainstorming, planning, sourcing, posing, creative lighting and compositing. The event also featured a live demonstration during which Field created the images in the conceptual fashion editorial “Delicate Spring”. Following this, attendees at this small and intimate workshop also had an opportunity to create an artwork of their own under Field’s tutelage, which gave them the opportunity to play with some Vanguard products on the day as well.

“Delicate Spring” is a story of reincarnation: an illustration of loss, the transient spirit, and rebirth. The transmigration of the soul has become a recurring theme in Field’s work, and with this particular series she wanted to focus on the effects of conflict, war and death; which inevitably results in the dawn of something new, a rebirth. The idea that from turmoil one will transcend to a superior state of being.

The images were created by combining Field’s two favourite in-camera photographic techniques: multiple- and long-exposure. Working with movement and a bright colour palette assisted in producing images that feel like you have stepped into a vivid dream.

For styling Field worked with a mix of bohemian fashion supplied by the Brand Institute, paired with vintage South African army uniforms and other war memorabilia kindly on loan from Kedar Heritage House. She added an array of Spring flowers to point towards the idea of new beginnings. The subtle introduction of yellow and green tones in the eye-shadow by make-up artist Tris Alves also added to the fresh Spring feel in the shoot, while lithe model Sarah Forsyth’s movements and ethereal look brought all the elements together for the perfect capture.
